Lymphedema

Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition in which swelling occurs in one or more of the extremities of a human body like your arm(s)or leg(s) due to the impairment of the flow of the lymphatic system.

Lymphedema can be caused by the damage or removal of lymph nodes of a human body during cancer treatment, some people are born with lymphedema. Mostly however people get it after a surgery, burn trauma or radiation treatments for various cancers. It happens due to the blockage in the lymphatic system that is a part of the body’s immune system. This blockage hinders the proper drainage of lymph fluid, and the buildup of fluid results in swelling.

Pneumatic Compression Device Therapy

Pneumatic compression devices are clinically proven to stimulate the lymphatic system. These devices use advanced intermittent pneumatic compression to provide a comfortable, convenient and effective way to self-manage lymphedema and nonhealing venous leg ulcers.

Manual Physical Therapy

Physical therapists with special training can help control and manage lymphedema through Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). CDT consists of four parts including Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) which is a gentle hands-on technique, meticulous skin care, compression bandaging/garments, and decongestive exercises.

Diagnostic Ultrasound

Diagnostic Ultrasound is a great noninvasive method to provide diagnostics for Lymphedema. Ultrasonography can be used to visualize enlarged iliac, axillary, para-aortal, and paracaval lymph nodes and detect abdominal masses that are obstructing lymphatic flow.

Lymphedema Skin Management

Lymphedema can make your skin dry and itchy. This makes cracks and breaks in the skin more likely and increases your risk of infection. We can help your skin stay in good condition through a variety of methods..

General Ask

What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition that causes swelling when lymph fluid builds up in the body's tissues, most commonly in the arms or legs.

What are the common symptoms of lymphedema?

Symptoms may include swelling, a feeling of heaviness or tightness, skin changes, reduced movement, and clothing or jewelry feeling tighter than usual.

What causes lymphedema?

Lymphedema can occur when the lymphatic system does not develop properly or becomes damaged. Surgery, radiation treatment, infection, injury, or certain medical conditions can affect lymphatic drainage.

Is lymphedema a serious condition?

Lymphedema is usually a long-term condition that requires proper management. Without appropriate care, swelling can worsen and may increase the risk of skin problems and infections.

How is lymphedema diagnosed?

A healthcare provider may evaluate your symptoms, medical history, and physical findings. Imaging tests may sometimes be used to assess the lymphatic system or rule out other causes of swelling.

Can lymphedema be treated?

Yes. While there is not currently a universal cure, treatment can help manage swelling and symptoms. Options may include compression therapy, specialized exercises, manual lymphatic drainage, skin care, and other treatments based on the individual's condition.

Can exercise help with lymphedema?

Appropriate exercise may help support lymphatic drainage and maintain mobility. A healthcare professional can recommend activities that are suitable for your condition.

Can lymphedema cause pain?

Lymphedema may cause heaviness, tightness, discomfort, or aching in the affected area. Some people experience little or no pain.

Can lymphedema go away on its own?

Lymphedema generally does not resolve permanently without management. Early evaluation and appropriate treatment can help control swelling and reduce the risk of complications.
